Dr. Ali Hage is a cardiac surgeon and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He is the Director of Robotic Cardiac Surgery at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, University Health Network, where he brings advanced expertise in robotic cardiac surgery, complex mitral and tricuspid valve repair, surgical treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, and structural heart disease. His appointment at UHN supports the development of a comprehensive robotic cardiac surgery program integrating clinical excellence, education, research and technological innovation.
Dr. Hage received his medical degree with distinction from Université Laval and completed his cardiac surgery residency at Western University, where he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. During his residency, he also completed a Master of Public Health in Quantitative Methods at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, developing expertise in clinical epidemiology, biostatistics and outcomes research. He subsequently completed advanced fellowship training in robotic cardiac surgery and complex mitral valve reconstruction at Cleveland Clinic under the mentorship of Dr. Marc Gillinov. He then joined NYU Langone Health as an attending cardiac surgeon specializing in robotic cardiac surgery and advanced mitral valve repair.
His clinical interests include robotic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery, complex mitral and tricuspid valve repair, cardiac arrhythmias and structural heart disease. His academic work focuses on surgical innovation and clinical outcomes, with particular interest in the use of artificial intelligence, computer vision and advanced imaging in cardiac surgery. His research includes the development of AI-supported tools for intraoperative assistance, surgical education and improved procedural decision-making, as well as registry-based research in mitral and tricuspid valve surgery.
Dr. Hage is also committed to surgical education and mentorship, having contributed to the training of residents and medical students. His work at UHN brings together advanced robotic surgery, valve reconstruction, research and education as the Division expands its focus on the future of minimally invasive and robotic cardiac surgery.
